Founder's Note: Why ShopTheBarber Exists
Direct answer
why ShopTheBarber exists usually means you need one calendar of truth, a bio booking link, and clearer no-show habits. ShopTheBarber is SaaS-first with 0% platform commission on direct and guest bookings - confirm live numbers on /pricing, then publish via /for-barbers.
I am Jadiss EL ANTAKI, founder and CEO of ShopTheBarber. This note is the honest version of why the product exists: not a growth slogan, and not a fake origin myth.
A bad haircut is a trust problem
I have difficult hair. If a barber does not already know it, the cut is wrong roughly nine times out of ten, even with a reference photo. Every move, every trip, the same gamble until I find someone I actually trust. A star rating does not fix that.
Specialists who match a cut to your hair, face shape, and head shape exist. What did not exist was a reliable way to find them nearby, or to vet them before paying for a service that is expensive to get wrong.
Living and traveling across Morocco, France, Italy, and Greece, I saw the same gap everywhere: countries advanced in nearly everything else, still running grooming on WhatsApp, walk-ins, and paper. In Morocco, an estimated 86% of shops have no website at all (founder estimate used in our August 2026 investor materials).
Booking apps built for dense US/UK marketplace dynamics often miss how Southern Europe and MENA shops actually operate: cash and card, walk-ins alongside bookings, pay-in-store without being punished for it.
The hiring side of the same gap
Hiring inside the trade is just as broken. My brother earned his barbering diploma and still had to go door-to-door for work. Shops cannot find talent; graduates cannot find shops. That is why Career Hub exists in the product as recruiting infrastructure, not as a decorative page.
Three symptoms, one root cause: the independent grooming trade never got real operating infrastructure outside a handful of dense Western markets.
What we are building (and what we are not)
ShopTheBarber is the operating system for the independent grooming economy: booking and ops, mobility (at-home and traveling barbers), marketplace commerce for product, hiring, professional content, and native AI-agent access (MCP) for every account type.
Live in production today, among other things: client discovery and booking (including guest booking), solo and shop operations, reviews, services, Explore, zone-adjusted subscriptions, and six account types (client, solo barber, shop, seller, company, blogger). Stack: React/Vite, Fastify, Postgres on Neon, deployed on Vercel and Render.
We are explicit about planned or gated layers (including some marketplace product economics, data-intelligence products, and B2B supply). Honesty about rollout is part of the brand.
The commercial wedge: 0% on owned bookings
Whether a client is new or already the barber's own, we do not take a cut of direct and guest bookings. That is a direct answer to marketplace models that charge roughly 20-30% even when the client came from Instagram, Google, or word of mouth.
